November 16-17, 2007 at Fort Lewis College

Joy Harjo and Denise Chavez at the 2005 Southwest Writers Institute The third annual Southwest Writers Institute (SWI) at Fort Lewis College will be November 16-17, 2007. On Friday evening, November 16, craft session leaders Aaron Abeyta, Steven Meyers, and Laura Tohe will share their work at a public reading in the Center of Southwest Studies Gallery. In addition, the SWI will offer a series of writing craft sessions and a writers’ panel on Saturday. This year, we’ve added a high school track for young adults. They will work with Ester G. Belin and Laura Tohe in sessions that will run parallel to the adult craft sessions. SWI 2007 will close with an open mic session for registered participants to showcase their work.

The Southwest Writers Institute at Fort Lewis College increases community access and exposure to literature and the craft of writing by offering literary readings, writing workshops, and writers’ panels to the community. In the process, SWI showcases the work of national and regional writers, and puts area writers in contact with one another. The inaugural 2005 SWI featured Joy Harjo, Denise Chávez, and Leonard “Red” Bird, and successfully rejuvenated and expanded the popular Durango Literature Series which ran from 1982-1993 and brought writers such as Maya Angelou, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Edward Abbey to Durango. The 2006 SWI saw increased participation from the community, and featured Sherman Alexie, among other writers.

Now in its third year, the 2007 SWI will build our previous two years’ success by once again offering keynote readings, craft sessions taught by published Four Corners writers, and a writers’ panel. We’re pleased to continue the SWI/Cutthroat Awards in Poetry and Short Fiction. In addition, SWI also offers five scholarships and continuing education credit for K-12 Educators. In addition, SWI is pleased to add a high school track for high school participants.

The Southwest Writers Institute would like to thank the Colorado Council on the Arts, the Ballantine Family Foundation, Bryan Peterson Illustration, the City of Durango, Cutthroat, A Journal of the Arts,, Maria's Bookshop, and at Fort Lewis College: the Scarlet Letters, the Department of English, the Writing Program, the Dean of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the FLC Foundation, and the President's Office.
